Firefighters rescue
elderly woman
An elderly handicapped woman was rescued from her smoky fourth-floor apartment Wednesday in North Charleston.
Firefighters were called about 5:45 p.m. to The Manor, an independent living facility at Spruill and Gullah avenues, for a report of a burning pot on the stove and a resident locked inside.
Rescuers broke through the apartment door and found the woman on the floor out of her wheelchair, said
Bianca Sancic, North Charleston's fire and life safety educator. Firefighters took her down four flights of stairs to EMS workers waiting out front.
The woman was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation. "She seems to be fine," Sancic said.
