The City of North Charleston Fire Department
Inspection Bureau
consists of a Chief Fire Inspector, one Fire Inspector II and five Fire
Inspector 1's. Each Fire Inspector is required to be certified through
the South Carolina Fire Marshal's office as Resident State Fire
Marshals. The current Chief Fire Inspector is Certified as a S.C.
Resident Fire Marshal, Southern Building Code Congress (SBCCI) Fire
Inspector Level 1, (SBCCI) Fire Safety Plan Examiner, (SBCCI) Chief Fire
Code Analyst, (SBCCI) Building Inspector, and (SBCCI) Building Plan
Examiner. Most of our training is through seminars, S.C. Fire Marshal's
office and The National Fire Academy.
The Fire Inspection Bureau is responsible for inspecting over 5600
commercial facilities such as Office Buildings, Church's, Day Cares,
Schools, Warehouse's, etc. They do a complete inspection inside and
outside, looking for fire hazards. They perform routine inspections,
re-inspections, complaints, City Business License Inspections and
Certificate of Occupancy inspections. They inspect commercial burn
sites. They give fire safety talks to the business community and the
public. They assist the department with their annual Fire Prevention
Static display, organize a yearly golf tournament for Carolina
Children's Charity, and help to assist the department and City where
needed.
The Chief Fire Inspector is responsible for overseeing the operations of
the Fire Inspection Bureau, compiling monthly and quarterly reports, as
well as reviewing plans for renovations and new construction within the
City.
We are currently looking at developing a program of going door to door
in our community to distribute brochures on winter fire safety, and
answer questions with reference to winter fire safety. For more
information on the North Charleston Fire Department Inspection Division,
